Stoneware & food safe stoneware glazes.
They can be washed in the dishwasher but do not use in the microwave.
IN THE MAKING
I love getting the chance to work with stoneware and thanks to a good friend I occasionally have the opportunity to put some of my stoneware pots in to her wood kiln.
First they are thrown on the wheel using stoneware, turned and finished when are leather hard and the mugs and espresso cups are given handles. Then they are all bisque fired and then glazed with stoneware glazes making them ready for the wood firing.
The process of wood firing is very different. With an electric kiln you can programme the firing in advance but with a wood firing you have to be present the whole time, trying to manually increase the temperature by consistently adding wood to the kiln (which is called stoking the kiln). This can between 18 - 20 hours depending on the weather and other variables. Once finished the kiln is left to cool, this takes almost 2 days. Then the pots are tidied up, making sure the bottoms are smooth.
