IN THE MAKING
I love making smoke fired pots because it is more of an event, rather than just a firing. It's an alternative firing that you can do in your back garden and it's fairly easy to assemble the pit. It's also exciting that the results can be a surprise - I have no control over how the pots are going to come out. Of course I choose what I include in the pit but the way in which the smoke colours the pots and creates the patterns is relatively unpredictable. Therefore each vessel is beautifully unique. I also love the surface & the colours that can be achieved without using any glaze.
STAGE 1 - The pots are thrown on the wheel, vessels left open and 'eggs' are closed (punctured with a tiny hole to let the air escape during the firing).
STAGE 2 - When they are leather hard they are turned to make sure they are smooth, then I burnish them using the back of a metal spoon. They are burnished for a second time when they are almost dry.
STAGE 3 - The burnished pots are bisque fired.
STAGE 4 - The bisque fired pots are placed in a pit or a saggar filled with sawdust, wood shavings, newspaper and wood scraps and fired very slowly. Occasionally I also put other things in the firing such as feathers, seaweed and horse hair which create different effects. The smoke and the flames create patterns on the smooth surface.
STAGE 5 - Once the materials have burned away and the pots have cooled down they are cleaned and sealed with wax.
